Martin Ochieng' Owuor

Projects Director

Martin Ochieng Owuor is a brilliant and industrious expert in the fields of Sustainable Development, Architecture, Master Planning and Environmental Design with experience spanning over 10 years. He was based at the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) – Urban Planning and Design Branch (City Planning, Extension and Design Unit) in Nairobi, Kenya. Working under the direct supervision of the Leader (Arch. Laura Petrella) - City Planning, Extension and Design Unit of the Urban Planning and Design Branch (UPDB), he was involved in assisting in the development of the Urban Planning agenda activities in collaboration with other Units of the Branch and with other Branches of UN-HABITAT, in particular: Assisting in the development of UN-HABITAT/UPDB urban planning policy documents, guidelines, presentations through identification and review of relevant publications and documents, drafting and commenting on documents and assisting in the production of information materials.

He co-authored case studies in conjunction with Arch.Laura Petrella, Plan. Salvatore Fundaro, Plan. Charles Baraka and Ivan Thung to assist the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia develop its National Spatial Strategy. The research formed part of the broader UN-HABITAT Future Saudi Cities Programme (FSCP) which presented a set of international experiences on urban planning from diverse geographical contexts. The documented Case Studies fell under five main categories, namely:

  1. City Wide (Bahir Dar – Ethiopia, Medellin – Colombia, Kuala Lumpur - Malaysia and Chattanooga - USA)
  2. Planned City Extension (Ouagadougou - Burkina Faso, Leidsche Rijn in Utrecht – Netherlands, Manhattan – USA, Pudong - China and Barcelona – Spain)
  3. City Infill (Honeysuckle – Australia, Munich Redevelopment and Vauban Sustainable Neighbourhood in Freidburg – Germany)
  4. Public Space (Montreal Underground City – Canada)
  5. New Town (Masdar and King Abdullah Economic City - Saudi Arabia, Kitakyushu Smart City – Japan and Almere - Netherlands).

He is working as a Pan African Consultant with projects spread across Sub-Saharan Africa in his home country of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Sudan, Nigeria and Zanzibar. He has the motivation and desire to play global transformative leadership roles as a professional and innovator as well as to make the greatest possible professional contribution, individually or in collaboration with others, to the well-being of the society.

He holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree in Climate Change and Sustainable Development from the University of Dar es Salaam courtesy of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). He was awarded a Scholarship by the African Union Commission (AUC) in 2013 to study for a Master of Science Degree in Environmental Management at the Pan African University Institute of Life and Earth Sciences (PAULESI) domiciled at the University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Oyo State, Federal Republic of Nigeria. His role model and mentor is Hitesh Mehta, a Kenyan-trained Architect, USA-trained Landscape Architect, Managing Director of HM Design and a leading authority on Eco-Tourism/Eco-Lodge Physical Planning and Eco-Design with projects worldwide and currently based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA.
